Growing trees and shrubs is a fantastic way to add low-maintenance colour and year-round interest to your garden. Not to mention the fact that they add height and structure, which can be especially useful if you want to create privacy and attract wildlife to your outdoor space. Bakker Spalding Garden Company stocks a great range of trees and shrubs, from flowering trees for small gardens (such as lilacs) to fruiting trees such as our lovely dwarf cherry ('Compact Stella'). Our trees and shrubs have a five-year growth guarantee. See the Bakker Spalding range of trees and shrubs below.
There's a tree to suit every garden. If you've got a tiny courtyard why not try the Japanese maple, which offers four seasons of interest. Delicate pink unfolding leaves become purplish in summer before turning turn fiery red in autumn. In winter the tree's elegant framework looks great when highlighted by frost. It's worth bearing in mind that if you've got a small garden you can still grow many different types of trees and shrubs, if you're prepared to prune them. The Princess tree, Paulownia tomentosa can be left to make a full-sized tree, or cut to the ground annually to coppice it for its attractive leaves. The same goes for Eucalyptus.
Trees and shrubs for wildlife
Ornamental shrubs and trees can be great for wildlife as well as people: evergreen shrubs and plants make excellent habitats for birds as they provide year-round shelter. Or why not try a Butterfly Bush (Buddleia) which will bring colour and fragrance (not to mention bees and butterflies!) to your garden over a long period. For early-season scent and flowers for pollinating insects on their first foraging missions, try the Winter Snowball, Viburnum x bodnantense 'Dawn'.
Climbers are some of the most versatile plants; offering everything from flowers to fruit to brilliant autumn colour. Bakker Spalding Garden Company stock a climber for every garden.
