  • The butterfly bush must not be pruned until after the winter. If it is pruned earlier, it runs the risk of severe or fatal frost damage.
The flowers develop on the current season’s growth, the one-year-old wood. If the butterfly bush is not pruned at all, these new branches will develop higher up each year and the flowers will be too far above the ground to be properly appreciated.

  • To keep your box hedge neat and tidy, it must be trimmed at least twice a year: once in spring and once in autumn. The best month for the autumn pruning is September, as box grows very slowly and needs more time to recover before the frost sets in. If the branches have a chance to lignify before winter they will not suffer frost damage.

  • Conifers come in all shapes and sizes. Many conifers can be trimmed into any shape desired, such as a sphere, a block or a column. Some conifers can even be planted as ground cover. Conifers add an extra dimension to the garden and have a distinguished appearance. They have been a source of fascination for centuries, which is why they have long been subjects for improvement and selection, with new conifers regularly being introduced to the market.

  • There are four general rules for maintenance pruning. The following branches should be removed:

    1. Suckers and reverted branches
    2. Dead and diseased branches
    3. Broken branches
    4. Branches that touch or cross
  • Shrubs that flower in spring have to be pruned directly after flowering. This applies to varieties such as forsythia, lilac (Syringa), broom (Cytisus) and currant (Ribes). Newly planted shrubs should not be pruned until the third year. Choose a dull, cloudy day for this.
