Fragaria x ananassa 'Ostara' are happy in most types of soil, so they can be grown just about anywhere. Strawberry plants adapt readily to most conditions and give results anywhere. They do like sunshine and strawberries grown in a sunny position will be sweeter. You can plant strawberries straight into the ground or in pots or planters. Don't forget to water them from time to time. Improve poor garden soil by mixing in some compost and Bakker's strawberry fertiliser. Make mounds of about 35-40 cm high around the strawberry plants and cover them with foil. The distance between rows should be 80 cm. Make crosses in the foil using a sharp knife and place the plants inside. The planting distance is 30 cm. Water immediately after planting. The soil should not be dry during the winter but neither should it be too wet.

Strawberries are one of the most popular fruits, especially for children. This strawberry plant provides gigantic strawberries that burst with flavour. These fruits do not have a long shelf life. Eat them directly, freeze them or mix them with other red fruit for your jams. Strawberries are very healthy and contain calcium, phosphorus, vitamin B and C. You don't need to perform rotation as strawberries can grow in their own beds.

Fertilize your strawberries in early spring with the special Bakker strawberry fertilizer (dissolved in water). Using too much nitrogen in the fertilizer will lead to a watery taste. Water the plants regularly. Regularly remove weeds and give extra water during dry periods. A mulch is recommended so that the soil doesn't dry out too quickly and also to protect the fruits from rotting. Did you plant with foil? If so, put straw between the plants and the fruits will ripen. The plants can usually remain up to two years in the same spot and then a new bed with young plants should be constructed in a different area. Fragaria x ananassa 'Ostara' are also great when grown in flower pots and planters. Place the plants in a cool, frost-free area during the winter.

Harvesting strawberries

Strawberries are best after they ripen on the plant, so pick them regularly and carefully so as not to bruise the fruit. The strawberries can be picked over a period of several months from June to the first night frost. Cut them from the sepals of the plant. Without some sort of protection, birds will do the harvesting work for you! Therefore, be sure to protect the plants. A few weeks after the last harvest, the leaves of the strawberry plants will begin to look unpleasant. Cut everything off while only leaving young leaves in the crown. Remove all suckers.
