Savoy Cabbage 'Melissa' F1 Hybrid - Seed
Beautiful, finely crimped Savoy cabbage!
The savoy cabbage seeds do not require any pre-treatment. If necessary, you can speed up the germination process by placing them in lukewarm water for 12 hours.
Cabbages grow fast and require quite a lot of fertilizer. They grow best in a moist-retaining soil that is well fertilsed in winter.
Sowing period under glass: February – April, open ground: April – May.
Note: cabbage seeds are very attractive to birds. For that reason, it is recommended to pre-sow in a cold greenhouse. Plant the seedlings in open ground when they are slightly bigger plants. You can also use other protective measures against birds.
Sowing is possible in 2 ways:
- Sow in a cold greenhouse in little pots from February up to April. Fill these pots with good fine sowing soil. Sow 1 savoy cabbage seed in one pot. Then make a maximum 1 cm thick layer of sowing soil in the pot. Lightly press down the soil and sprinkle it with water. Place the pots in a cold greenhouse (a living room is too warm!). Do not allow them to dry out. Give sufficient space to the germinated savoy cabbages, place the pots at a distance from one another whereby the leaves almost touch each other. Plant the savoy cabbage plants outdoors from late April, every 70 cm in a row and with 70 cm between the rows.
- Sowing in open ground, preferably in full sunlight, is possible from April to late May. The young plants are able to resist some frost. Loosen the earth to a depth of at least 30 cm. Place sticks at the beginning and end of the sowing row and span a rope between them. Create a small groove along the spaned rope. Thinly sow a row of seeds, between thumb and index finger. Close the little grooves, in such a way that the savoy cabbage seeds are 1 cm below the ground. Lightly press down the soil and spray the soil with water. Remove the rope and place a label with the seed's name at the beginning of the row. When sowing several rows, maintain a 20 cm distance between them. If necessary, place chicken wire over the seedlings to protect them against hungry birds. If there are 4 little leaves on the seedlings, you can thin them and plant them out further in the row or put them in pots. Take protective measures against birds!
All cabbages are related to the crucifer family (Brassicaceae or Cruciferea). Very often, the many cabbage types are genetically almost identical. The Latin name for many of these edible cabbages is Brassica oleracea. The various types of cabbage are classified as varieties that have been selected and grown by humans in the past 5000 years. The Latin name for head cabbage, for instance, is Brassica oleracea convar. capitata. Specifically for savoy cabbage: Brassica oleracea convar. capitata var. sabauda.
There are 3 types of savoy cabbage: green savoy cabbage, yellow savoy cabbage and green conical cabbage. In the Netherlands we predominantly grow green savoy cabbage.
There are many cultivars of cabbage. There are early to late strains and even strains that you can sow throughout a year. There are also strains that are able to resist less or more cold. Observe the sowing periods stated on the packaging (quick growers are often less winter-hardy and are often not suitable for harvesting in the frost period).
Brassica oleracea convar. capitata var. sabauda are biennial plants that usually only bloom and run to seed in the second year. Savoy cabbage is the most winter-hardy head cabbage.
Savoy cabbage will taste best when fresh. However, it is possible to freeze the cabbage. Freshly cut savoy cabbage can easily be stored in the fridge, cellar or dark shed for a few weeks.
You can cook savoy cabbage with potatoes and meat, but fried in a wok with Indian herbs and pieces of chicken is also delicious!
Only give extra water during dry periods. The savoy cabbage may receive plenty of fertilizer during the whole season. Keep the plot free from weeds. This will make sure that the savoy cabbage plant continues to grow well.Harvesting
Harvesting period: June – December.
When the cabbages are almost fully grown, the time of harvesting has come. Use a sharp knife and cut the main stem precisely under the head cabbage. After this, the complete plant can be uprooted.
