Pontederia cordata
Pickerel Weed (Pontederia Cordata) has an unusual inflorescence making it an outstanding feature in the pond. The leaves are a magnificent shiny green and the flowers are exceptionally beautiful. Aquatic plants add the finishing touch to a garden pond and give it a natural appearance. Besides being attractive, these plants have an important biological function. They keep the water clear by absorbing nutrients so that there is nothing left for the algae to feed on.

The aquatic plant, Pickerel Weed, is best used in a pond basket. Cover the basket with jute and fill the pond with special soil. Plant Pickerel Weed in the basket, fill with soil and add a growth ball. Cover everything with the remaining jute and sprinkle with a layer of gravel. Place the basket just below the surface or up to 10-30 cm deep in the pond. If your pond is not too shallow, you can place your basket within a pile of stones. This plant can also grow in a large tub with water. Place this plant in complete sunshine. The best time to plant is between May and June.

Pickerel Weed makes an excellent combination plant

The Pickerel Weed is one of the most beautiful pond plants. It is not only beautiful when planted in large groups, but it is also gorgeous when combined with other plants. You can make a subtle combination with Butomus Umbellatus, which has narrow leaves that contrast well with the Pickerel Weed's large leaves. You can also plant your Pickerel Weed in a watertight container on your patio.

Pickerel Weed is often called Water Hyacinth.

Pickerel Weed is a pond plant that needs plenty of food, thus, be sure to provide it with a growth ball every year in springtime. [link to growing bulbs] It is also a rich bloomer and it is recommended to replant it annually using fresh pond soil. Cut off its dead leaves in autumn and remove them from the pond. You can place the basket deeper into the pond during the winter so that it stays under the ice. Its roots cannot tolerate frost and should therefore remain well below the ice.
