How to grow tulips
Plant tulip bulbs deeply with the pointed end facing upwards- around three times their own depth. So if a bulb is 2 inches (5cm) end to end, plant it 6 inches (15cm) deep. Tulips can be planted from the early autumn to early winter. They appreciate a sunny spot in well-drained soil: if you garden on heavy clay consider adding extra compost or grit when planting bulbs.
Using tulips in the garden
Tulips look great with traditional spring bedding flowers such as forget-me-nots and wallflowers. For impact, always plant in groups of at least six. Smaller varieties such as ’Red Riding Hood’ look great in pots and rockeries. If you grow tulips in a spring bedding scheme, don’t forget, you can lift them and store them in a shed or garage for next year, and make space in the garden for summer flowers.
