How to grow irises

All our irises love the sun. How much water they require depends on the type. Bearded irises like a dryish soil, Dutch iris and dwarf iris are happy in ordinary garden soil, and Siberian irises prefer a damper position with moist soil, perhaps near a pond.

Using irises in the garden

Dwarf irises are perfect for garden pots and containers - put them near a porch or doorway where you can see them close-up and appreciate their beautiful flowers and delicate markings. These long-lasting bulbs will bring an early taste of spring for years to come. Bearded irises are perfect in beds and borders, and will grow well in hot dry spots next to the house wall. Dutch iris make great cut flowers, so why not grow a row or two in your vegetable patch or allotment?
