Fabulous fragrances

Fragrance adds an extra dimension to this border. From early spring to late autumn, enjoy lovely aromatic flowers. This border is part of a small, playful design, with flowing lines. The trellis, placed transversely across the border, divides the garden into separate areas.

In nature we find a wide variety of fragrant plants. From perfumy Hyacinths to the aromatic woody smelling Thyme plants. In this border you will experience the wide scope of fragrant plants.
On the patio are three large tubs. In spring these are filled with spring bulbs; Tulips [Tulipa Preastans "Tub. Var"] (1), white Anemone [Anemone blanda] (2) and Hyacinths [Hyacint "Carnagie"] (3). The latter should be planted along the rim as they spread a heady perfume.
In summer Datura [Datura "Fuerwerk"] (4) and Mimosa [Acacia "Mimosa"] (5) grow in the tubs. These lovely tub plants bring a Mediterranean atmosphere to your patio. The tiny flowers of the Mimosa (5) and the huge flowers of the Datura (4) also make a nice contrasting combination.
Neither plant, however, is hardy. They must both spend the winter in a frost-free place.
The Eucalyptus tree [Eucalyptus gunii] (6)and the ground covering Thyme [Thymus serpyllum] (7) are both evergreen and very aromatic. In winter they will provide a nice view from the house.
At the far left is Magnolia [Magnolia lilliflora "Susan"] (8), A plant with large, deep-red flowers and the most amazing fragrance. This early-flowering, small tree grows out quite wide and will eventually reach a height of about three metres.
The edge of the border is formed by a fragrant hedge [Buddleia davidii, abeliophyllum, Rosa rugossa, Philadelphus, Syringa vulgaris] (9). This shrub selection will flower at different times, forming a free-growing hedge that will need quite a bit of space.
Throughout the rest of the border we find Viburnum [Viburnum tinus] (10). This non-deciduous shrub brings a calm green balance to the garden. It is very easy to prune should it become too large. Prune the Viburnum (10) in spring, after flowering. The flowering period is lengthy at a time when there is not much else of interest in the garden (October - April) and after flowering the plant grows decorative blue berries.
Rock soap wort {Saponaria ocymoides] (11) and Thyme (7) flower in May. They both have small pink flowers but their fragrances are very different.
The Peony [Paeoni, white and pink] (12) also flowers in early spring. Once the plant is established, which can take a few years, it will flower with large, lovely smelling flowers. The plant does not like to be moved.
From June onwards many plants come into flower.
Of course, you can not have a fragrant border without the Lily [Lillium 'Inzel" and "Vivaldi"] (13). The huge flowers smell absolutely gorgeous. The combination of pink and white Lilies (13) that is used here goes really well with the colour and shape of the Lavender [Lavendula ang. "Munstead"] (14) and the Maiden Pink [Dianthus delt. Erecta] (15). The smell of Lavender (14) is familiar to everyone, but for the sweet aroma of the low growing Maiden Pink (15) you may have to crouch down among the flowers.
In July the blue-purple flowering Catmint [Nepeta subsessilis] (16) comes into bloom.
A fiery farewell to the summer is provided by the [Phlox "Orange Perfection"] (17), a tall, fragrant variety in warm orange.
The trellis is covered with a combination of the yellow Climbing Rose [Rosa "Paul's Lemon Pilar"] (18) and the yellow flowering Honeysuckle [Lonicera "Goldflame] (19), both of which are naturally fragrant.
