Flowers around a water feature
Rippling water surrounded by atmospheric planting with the accent on unusual flowers. This neglected corner of the garden is transformed into a colourful water garden. With an old garden wall as a backdrop, a classical urn forms the focal point. Straight smooth lines (zinc edges) combine beautifully with the natural lines of water and plants.
Border: 4m x 5.5m Location: sun / light shade Soil type: normal garden soil
Varigated Bamboo [ Phyllostachys aureosulcata "Spectabilis] (1), on the left hand side at the back of the garden, is evergreen and gives structure to this part of the garden summer and winter. This cultivar reaches only about 1.5m tall and is therefore also suitable for smaller gardens. On the right, a group of three Rhododendrons (2) forms a winter green backdrop. In spring these shrubs flower with lush, large flowers. Dwarf Pampas Grass [Cortaderia selloana "Pumila"] (3) is suited to any water garden. In autumn this ornamental grass produces lovely beige plumes. This plant will need to be protected from severe frost, particularly at the base. To do this, tie the foliage together as frost approaches, and wrap the plant in a mat. At the front, next to the Dwarf Pampas Grass, the water basin gradually merges into a boggy area. Here we find Water Iris [Iris laevigatae "Snowdrift"] (4). These extraordinarily shaped, white flowers deserve a closer look. Reed Mace [ Typha angustifolia] (5) with its characteristic 'cigars' feels perfectly at home here. Along the wall grow some large foliage plants. Large leaves overhanging the water's edge always look spectacular. Next to the Hostas [Hosta-mixed] (6) are some Arum Lilies [Zantedeschia - pink] (7). These tubers can be forced indoors and moved outside around mid-May. The beautiful pink flowers last throughout the summer. Around the Bamboo and the Rhododendrons grow various unusual pink-flowered plants. This is the ground cover plant Coronilla Varia (8), which flowers abundantly from June through to September. On either side grow two spectacular plants. Gloxinia [Incarvillea delavayi] (9) which has fern-like foliage from which large deep pink flowers spring up in summer, and Chinese Primula [Primula vialii] (10), which has almost artificial looking, brightly coloured flower spikes. The top of the spike is red and the small flowers below are pink. At the very back of the garden a combination of red, botanical Tulips and white Crocus [Tulipa 'Scarlet Baby' + Crocus] (11), flower from April onwards. They can be planted in small groups between the perennials.
