English-style rose-border

"Several different rose varieties have been used in this border, in combination with shrubs and perennials. The varieties used and the way in which they have been planted create an English ambience in the garden."

Border: 8 by 4 metres
Site: Sunny
Type of soil: Normal garden soil

This border is part of an English-style landscape garden design. Dry stone walls accentuate the different levels and follow the undulating lines of the border. Typical English grassy paths make the garden accessible.

At the back of the border are two groups of Viburnum tinus (1), an evergreen shrub that flowers in autumn and winter with pinkish-red umbels.
Between these two groups, the red Hedging rose "Stromboli" [Rosa "Stromboli"] (2) flowers between June and October.
The double flowers appear in clusters and are very striking.
The pink Saponaria [Saponaria ocymoides] (3) and the blue Creeping bellflower [Campanula poscharskyana] (4) flower at the same time as the roses and trail beautifully over the wall.

Three standard roses with blue flowers, Rosa "Blue Ocean" (5), are planted at a distance from one another in the border in front of the dry stone wall.
At the front of this border are two more groups of the Hedging rose "Stromboli" (2), with, in between, the pink Ground cover rose "The Fairy" [Rosa "The Fairy"] (6).

The border is supplemented with groups of perennials that are popular in English gardens. This provides extra variation.
For instance, a group of Lupins [Lupinus Russel Hybrid] (7) give the border a cheerful accent. They have erect stems and an unusual inflorescence, flowering in various colours.
The standard roses are surrounded by Baby's Breath [Gypsophila paniculata] (8). This is a classic partnership. The little flowers of Gypsophila look like white clouds between the other plants.
In the middle there is a group of dark blue Lavender [Lavandula angustifolia "Munstead"] (9), whose colour combines well with the standard roses.
Finally we have a group of Delphinium [Delphinium elatum "Arrow"] (10). The flower spikes of this tall plant can grow to a length of 50 cm, making it very popular with amateur gardeners.

Various spring bulbs can be added to the border to bring forward the flowering season. They should be planted in small groups in the border.
The low-growing Tulip "Toronto" [Tulipa "Toronto"] (11) and Glory-of-the-Snow [Chionodoxa forbesii] (12) together form a fine red and blue colour combination.
Groups of Botanical crocuses [Crocus] (13) flower as early as February.
The Parrot tulips are quite unusual. "Blue Parrot" [Tulipa "Blue Parrot"] (14) has blue flowers with a fanciful shape. They appear in April.
